Raya & The Last Dragon's official trailer shows off the film's action ahead of its release in theaters and on Disney+ in March through Premier Access.
A new trailer for Raya and the Last Dragon shows off the film's high-flying adventure and spectacle. Lending their voices to the film are Star Wars actress Kelly Marie Tran as Raya and Awkwafina as Sisu, the titular dragon whose voice will be instantly recognizable for fans of the actress. Raya is a young warrior searching for a dragon who can help save her world, Kumandra, from an impending evil force known as the Druun.
The film will be Disney Animation's first original theatrical release in nearly five years. The last one to grace screens, Moana, was a certified hit and Raya and the Last Dragon is hoping to repeat that success. The film was originally scheduled to be released in November 2020 but was pushed to March 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. During Disney's Investor's Day 2020, the studio announced that the film would be sticking with its release date while simultaneously premiering on Disney+ via its Premier Access platform, previously utilized by Mulan.
Disney has released the official trailer and a new poster for the film ahead of its release in a little over a month. Previous teasers showed off the stunning animation and hinted at the scale of Kumandra, but the new trailer finally gives fans a glimpse at the stunningly realized, diverse world. The trailer is also the first look at Awkwafina's Sisu, the titular dragon that will help Raya save her world from destruction.
As per usual, Disney stuns with its animation and the fully realized world that Raya inhabits. From bustling cityscapes to desert tundras, the trailer shows of the world Kumandra and it's one that will be exciting to explore once the film is finally released. The trailer is also very action heavy, something the director has already hinted at. While the trailer lacks the musical spectacular of Disney's last original animation property, Moana, it makes up for it in more ways than one.
Most notably is Awkwafina's Sisu, who is reminiscent of another iconic Disney dragon. Sisu seems like the perfect counterpart to the animated Mulan's Mushu, voiced by Eddie Murphy in the 1998 film. Sadly, Mushu was left out of the recent live-action adaptation, to many fans' consternation, but Sisu looks like the perfect remedy for that. Raya will have a lot on her plate while dealing with Sisu and trying to save her world and the trailer is a promising look at Disney's upcoming film. It will also be the latest test of Disney+'s Premier Access platform. Many have wondered if Mulan was as successful as Disney had hoped it would be, but with Raya and the Last Dragon's similar release plan, it seems that Disney is confident in both the film and it's ability to reach a wide audience via it's streaming platform.
