Superman & Lois Starts Filming Next Week

Superman & Lois star Elizabeth Tulloch confirms filming on the Arrowverse's newest series, co-starring Tyler Hoechlin, starts next week.

Superman & Lois, the latest upcoming addition to the Arrowverse (or, CWverse?), is officially beginning to film next week, according to lead actress Elizabeth Tulloch. The series will star Tulloch as Lois Lane and Tyler Hoechlin as Superman/Clark Kent/Kal-El, who have played their roles previously in past cameos in the Arrowverse. Superman & Lois is slated to air on The CW in 2021.

With the end of Arrow and the announced cancellation of Supergirl, the future of the CWverse/Arrowverse has been a matter of conjecture. Superman & Lois will be the first new project developed in the Arrowverse timeline since the franchise’s fate was called into question. However, The CW's Arrowverse doesn't seem to be shutting down anytime soon as Superman & Lois gears up to start filming. Not only will the series further explore the new Post-Crisis Multiverse, but it will also examine Clark and Lois' home life as they raise twin, teenage boys.

Commenting in response to a fan’s question on a recent Instagram post speaking out against the bullying of LGBTQ youth, Tulloch confirmed that Superman & Lois has been doing screen tests this week, with proper filming for the first season officially starting next week. Given all the craziness of quarantined productions in the age of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s nice to get some confirmation from the cast that the show is well on its way. Tulloch recently posted a picture of her with her fellow cast members, all masked, to promote the series’ safe ramp-up to production.

For fans of the Arrowverse, Superman & Lois could be a gauge of things to come. Given the vastly different markets of The CW and a streaming platform like HBO Max, it seems likely that the two will be able to coexist while both are putting forward DC content. Plus, the multiverse model DC’s film franchise is incorporating should make it easy for any number of shows to run simultaneously, with or without sharing the same immediate world. The Arrowverse has played with multiverse plotlines before, like in its “Crisis on Infinite Earths” storyline that featured cameos from the likes of Kevin Conroy’s Batman and Ezra Miller’s Flash.

Whatever its role in the larger DC mythos, Superman & Lois has a lot of independent promise. It should be interesting for fans to see more focused stories for Tulloch and Hoechlin and see how the new series stacks up against Superman’s last TV outing, the beloved Smallville. Superman & Lois will debut on The CW in 2021.
