Why Vision’s Original Comics Costume Looks So Cheap In The MCU

Paul Bettany's Vision will somehow return in Marvel's Disney+ show WandaVision, and he'll be wearing the character's original green and yellow costume from the comics, except here it looks rather cheap. Vision was killed off in Avengers: Infinity War, despite the best efforts of Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), with Thanos (Josh Brolin) destroying him in order to obtain the Mind Stone from within his head.

Although the heroes who were victims of Thanos' snap returned in Avengers: Endgame, there was no such comeback for Vision in the movie, since he was killed prior to the blip taking place. Nonetheless, his death hasn't left him without an MCU future, as he will indeed co-lead in what will be the MCU's first Disney+ show, WandaVision, which is currently expected to release on the streaming service in December 2020.

As seen in the first WandaVision trailer, Vision will don the character's green and yellow costume from the pages of Marvel Comics. It's a notable change from Vision's typical MCU appearance, which has been fairly consistent since his debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron (save for briefly wearing a sweater in Captain America: Civil War). The toned down purple and grey has been switched for a bright green costume with a yellow cape, which is how he looked in the comics dating back to his debut in The Avengers #57 in 1968, but this time it looks like a cheap, homemade version. There's likely a good reason for that, though, with it seemingly being a Halloween costume.

When the first look at WandaVision dropped at the Super Bowl back in February 2020, it revealed Scarlet Witch in a comics-accurate costume, and that had the same homemade vibe to it. With both Vision and Scarlet Witch confirmed to be wearing riffs on their original comic book costumes, but not doing so for the duration of the show, then it makes sense it's for a party of sorts, which fits with the new reality Wanda Maximoff has created. WandaVision is playing on numerous classic sitcom tropes (and directly parodying several outright), and so doing a Halloween episode would work well within that context. When Vision appears in costume, there are a few other people - mostly children - in costumes behind him, with the town of Westview looking well set for the holiday.

This idea is further supported by the appearance of Kathryn Hahn's nosy neighbor, who the trailer reveals is called Agnes (and is widely believed to be a take on the Marvel Comics character Agatha Harkness). When Vision approaches her in the trailer, she's also in a costume - dressed, fittingly, as a witch - which again suggests that this is Halloween being shown, although at this point Vision is back in his regular MCU costume (at a point when it looks like he may be starting to realize something is amiss). With two witches potentially in play, then Halloween is the perfect time for some magical mayhem to be going down in WandaVision.
