Showrunner Geoff Johns has announced the return of Solomon Grundy and the inclusion of Eclipso in Stargirl season 2. DC's Stargirl follows high school student Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) as she rallies together a misfit group of young superheroes heroes to fight villains that have been threatening humanity for several decades. The exuberant series is inspired by a DC Comics character created by Johns and Lee Moder. Johns had modeled Courtney in 1999 after his sister, who died in a 1996 plane crash, and several years after introducing Whitmore to the comics, he rendered her stories into a TV show. Johns is ecstatic about Stargirl season 2, which is due to premiere sometime next year.
Stargirl premiered its entire season 1 on DC Universe in May 2020. Then, only a day after its streaming debut, the show also aired its first episode on The CW, and subsequent episodes were telecast every week. The show was only halfway through its CW run when, in July, the network renewed it for season 2, announcing that the show would broadcast its new season exclusively on the CW and cease its association with DC Universe. Stargirl's departure from DC Universe evoked fans' concerns about the show's quality, but they were addressed effectively by the show's creator, who promised that Stargirl season 2 would be better than its earlier version. It seems that Johns is living up to his promise as he has teased some exciting updates about the show's upcoming season.
During the show's DC FanDome panel today, Johns confirmed that Stargirl season 2 will feature the entry of Eclipso and the return of Solomon Grundy. Johns expressed that he is excited for people to "see more of Grundy," who is clearly not done yet. In Stargirl's season 1 final, Hourman (Cameron Gellman) had defeated Grundy and spared his life. Hourman had asked Grundy to leave and never return. Johns has also revealed that Eclipso is going to be "very important" in Stargirl season 2. The fan-favorite villain's appearance in season 2 was teased at the end of the Stargirl's season 1 when Shiv appeared before a Heart of Darkness diamond and said, "I see you, Eclipso."
Eclipso and Grundy weren't, however, the only characters discussed during the Stargirl panel, as Johns also addressed fans' questions about Jakeem Thunder and Doctor Mid-Nite's owl, Hootie. While Johns didn't confirm if Hootie would appear in Stargirl season 2, he assured fans that the show would introduce the owl "at some point." As for Jakeem Thunder, Johns stated that Stargirl is introducing characters at its own pace as there is already a lot of avenues to explore with the existing creators. For that reason, it's unclear when Thunder will appear in the series. But for now, the pink pen, which is speculatively associated with Thunder, will have a pivotal role in the new season. Including all of these characters in the same season could make the show feel stuffed, so it's a good move to just focus on Eclipso and Grundy this season.
Given that Grundy's arc had winded up conclusively in Stargirl season 1, his appearance in the show's second season feels quite redundant. There is an entire roster of comics characters awaiting a televised introduction, but it's being compromised due to Stargirl's penchant for revisiting old arcs. As for Eclipso, his appearance in the Stargirl season 2 has been predicted since the show's season 1 finale. But with Johns' formal affirmation, fans can look forward to the supervillain's takeover of the Blue Valley. It appears that Johns hasn't cast his Eclipso yet, but given the character's significance in the new show, it's likely to happen soon.
